Okay, so I’m assuming by now you’ve heard the news about EMI releasing its entire music catalog to the world without the hassles of DRM, or Digital Rights Management. I think it’s great and I don’t believe it will mean the end of songwriting as a profession. It will CHANGE that profession and the way it’s monitized, but end it? Don’t think so.

But, as usual, something else jumped out at me while I read the linked article:

“Steve Jobs, the chairman of Apple, who shared the stage with Nicoli for
the announcement, predicted that half of the five million songs in the
iTunes music catalog would be sold without restrictions by the end of
the year. None of the other major record labels, which with EMI account
for 70 percent of music sales, have yet said they would follow the move.”

I’m not a math genius, but doesn’t that mean that 30 PERCENT of all music sold is coming from Independent Artists and Labels?

Yup, I thought so.
